Frequently Asked Questions

Needle Questions

I have heard needle tips play a very important role in knitting. Can you explain why?

Some find that finely tipped needle tips make it easier to insert the needle in between stitches. This is especially important when working with multiple stitches and fine yarns. This prevents knitting fine stitches together or having stitches drop off. Many people report that their knitting improves with fine points. Knitters who like to create lace patterns also like a very fine point for the reasons mentioned above.

When knitting with heavier yarns, a knitter might find a less pointed tip easier to use. It all depends on the maker’s preference.

How do I determine what is the right type for me?

Trial is usually the best way to do this. KnitPro has developed some sampler sets just for this reason. Look for them in our needle section or contact us for more information. You will find videos on choosing the right needle at: https://www.youtube.com/KnitProeu

In addition, you can ask experienced friends why they use the type they do and share in their knowledge. We are big on "sharing" at KnitPro.

Are circular needles and double pointed needles interchangeable?

Yes! Of course it's possible! As long as you are knitting a small project on the round, you can absolutely replace a set of 5 dpns with circular needles and you can also do magic loop, if that's your thing

What are circular knitting needles used for?

Circular needles are the perfect choice for knitting in the round and also knitting flat pieces. They consist of a needle tip on each end with a cord joining them. These are used for projects like hats, sweaters, socks, sleeves, mittens and more.

Which needles are best for new knitters?

If you are a knitting beginner, you might consider investing in some bamboo needles – they are practical and well priced. We would also suggest you get on our mail list and subscribe to our newsletters and the learning videos that you will find here: https://www.youtube.com/user/KnitProeu

What knitting needles do I need for a blanket?

Circular needles are great for any blanket project. They're long enough to hold a whole blanket and the size 8 is perfect for any worsted weight yarn.

How do I stop my knitting from twisting in the round?

A good trick for ensuring your stitches aren't twisted is to lay the work down on a table after you've cast on and make sure all the stitches are facing the same way without a twist before you join in the round or start knitting

How can I keep my knitting cables straight?

Try steaming to straighten your cable. You can try to hold the cable in the steam above a pot of boiling water for five minutes, or more if needed.

Should I clean my cables before using?

You can wipe down your cables and tips with rubbing alcohol before using to ensure a smooth yarn feed. After that, occasionally wiping them down is recommended.

Are the KnitPro wooden needles certified?

Yes, all of our wooden needles are FSC™ certified which shows that all the wood used to make the needles in sourced from certified sustainable sources.

KNITPRO'S WOODEN NEEDLES

What is the difference between the various wooden needles (Symfonie, Ginger, Rosewood)?

Our wooden needles (with the exception of our Bamboo line) are made of laminated Birchwood and the only difference in the variety of wooden needles is color.

What are the advantages of needles made from laminated wood?

KnitPro’s laminated wood is made from European birch veneers which have been completely impregnated with coloured resin, then hydraulically pressed and bonded together under a highly specialized process. This material is more costly and much harder & durable than either ebony or rosewood. Unlike in other wooden needles, water absorption in laminated wood needles is negligible and, as a result, there is no chance of warping with the smoothness of the needles staying for a very long time with slight care. The same property makes our needles very strong, enables the points to be sharp and provides a lifetime of pleasurable use, if handled correctly.

How can the wooden needles surface be kept smooth?

The wooden and bamboo needles get naturally moisturized by the oils in the wool yarn and your hands and become smoother with every use. However, it is good to clean and moisturize your wooden needles a couple of times a year. To do this, clean your needles with a clean, dry muslin or paper towel and apply a very thin layer of natural bee’s wax. Allow it to dry and then buff it with soft muslin or chamois cloth.

Alternatively, rubbing your needles with wax paper is also a good option. Whatever method you are using for moisturizing the needles, make sure you let them dry for at least 24 hours before using them for knitting.

KNITPRO'S METAL, KARBONZ & ALUMINUM NEEDLES

Do any of the KnitPro metal needles contain nickel?

None of our needles contain nickel.

Are the metal Needles solid or hollow?

The smaller sized needles are made from solid metal pipes, and the larger sized metal needles are manufactured from hollow pipes to avoid excess weight.

What are the Nova/Nova Cubics needles made of?

These needles are made of brass and then electroplated with chrome.

What are the Karbonz Knitting Needles made of?

Karbonz needles are made from carbon fiber rods, one of the strongest materials known. The needles only come in black, a natural color of carbon fiber.

These needles have high tensile strength, are light and have a lot of flexibility. Surface made of carbon fiber helps the stitches move smoothly on the needle.

What are the benefits of using Square/ Cuboid needles?

Unique cuboid shape of square/cuboid needles gives comfort to the hand and yields uniform stitch formation. Due to their ergonomic shape, these needles are recommended for knitters having arthritis problem and other joint or muscular pains. Also great for knitting more evenly and neatly.

What kind of coating/plating is done on the aluminum needles?

The aluminum needles are anodized in a variety of colors. Anodizing is an electrolytic process for producing coating on aluminum and its alloys. The Needle sizes are laser printed on all metal needles.

Do the Zing or SmartStix needles contain Nickel?

KNITPRO’S INTERCHANGEABLE NEEDLES

What are the cables on the KnitPro Interchangeable Needles made of?

All of the KnitPro cables are made of flexible nylon.

Will the cables work on all the different varieties of interchangeable needles? Do I need to buy different cables for different needle tips?

All our cables are compatible across our whole product range. Any of the KnitPro Interchangeable needles and cables can be used together.

How do I ensure that the cable does not come loose from the needle tip while knitting?

Make sure you use the included "key" to tighten the tips to the cables. If, for any reason they loosen, just re-insert the key and make sure to tighten securely.

What purpose do the end-caps that come along with the Interchangeable needles serve?

They are used when you wish to remove the needle tips from one or both sides of the work on the connecting cable. They make sure your work does not fall off the needle and unravel.

NEEDLE SETS

Why should I buy a whole set of needles?

As you can see, we sell a good number of needle sets at KnitPro. Once you find the type of needle that suits you, or the projects you most often knit, it makes sense to invest in a set in order to have a variety of sizes at your disposal. It’s cost efficient, and the sets come packaged in suitable cases so it helps you organize your tools.

CROCHET PRODUCTS

We sell a variety of crochet hooks individually and in sets. For detailed information, please visit:

Why do you need different size crochet hooks?

Smaller hooks make finer and tighter crochet, while larger hooks produce a bulkier, more open weave. Patterns and yarn labels always suggest what size hook to use, but you may need to switch to a different size to achieve the correct gauge.

How are crochet hooks measured?

Our Blush & Lilac gauge can be used for measuring both knitting needles and crochet hooks. The size of a crochet hook is determined by the diameter of its shaft.

How do I clean the handles of the crochet hooks?

Wooden crochet hooks can be cleansed and polished like wooden knitting needles. The coated crochet hooks may feel sticky after ongoing use. These can be washed with soapy water and cleaned with a dry tissue or fabric.

Can the regular cables be used with interchangeable/Tunisian Crochet Hooks?

Yes, all our cables are compatible across the whole product range.

Can the mentioned cable length be achieved upon joining the cable with crochet hook?

No, the mentioned cable length is achieved when the cable is joined with 2 interchangeable needles. Since, the crochet hook length is different than the needles and the technique to use the crochet hooks is also different so the mentioned cable length will not be achieved.

ACCESSORIES

KnitPro sells a full range of accessories and tools that can help a knitter achieve a well-finished project. Most accessory products are self-explanatory, but here are a few questions and answers in regard to some of our most popular accessories.

How much yarn can be wound on the mega ball winder?

The mega ball winder can wind up to 450 - 500 Gms of fingering weight yarn.

If the band comes off the wooden ball winder, what should I do?

This problem arises when the band is left on the winder’s driver wheel when the winder is not in use and it stretches out. We suggest releasing the band from the drive wheel when it’s not in use. This extends the life of the elastic band. We also sell the replacement band sets separately, if needed.
