We’re in the middle of the summer and what’s better than knitting a fun summer tee? The project is small enough to take with you on the beach or to a campsite, or if you’re lucky enough to travel further, it will even fit in your carry-on bag for a plane journey.

Knitting Summer Tops – Can You Wear Knitted Garments During Summer?
A hot summer day might not seem to be the best occasion to wear a knitted top. But, rest assured, it actually works really well.
It is important to consider when and where you are planning to wear your top. If you live in very warm climates the choice of yarn will be different than for knitters who live in moderate climates So choose your yarn accordingly!
The Summer Tee by Milly’s Knit Designs uses DK weight yarn. DK weight yarn is twice as thick as Fingering / 4-Ply yarn and is around 200m - 300m per 100g.
There are many great options of DK weight yarn on the market that would work perfectly for summer garments. We recommend a combination of linen and cotton, but silk is also a great option!
Because the pattern asks for DK weight yarn, you could even consider combining two strands of Fingering/4-Ply yarn. That way you could use up some mini skeins and make a beautiful colour gradient.
You could also knit it in a slightly warmer wool. This tee makes a great everyday outfit and you can easily combine it with a pair of jeans or your favourite dress.
Cool and colourful? Nice!
Is The Pattern Beginner Friendly?
Yes, it is! It is a great pattern for novice knitters who would like to try to knit their first summer top!
The pattern is very detailed and comes with a lot of background information. We have even linked a tutorial on how to knit jogless stripes, so you’ll be learning a whole range of new techniques.
The tee is knit seamlessly. It includes variety, for example short rows. Whilst these techniques require a bit of concentration when you’re doing them for the first time, the pattern itself is fairly easy. Most parts are knit in a plain stockinette stitch, only the raglan increases have a mock cable detail. You’ll find this really fun, we promise!
It’s always great to share the joy. We are providing this pattern for free, so you can invite all your knitting friends to join the party. The more the merrier, just like the colours that you should choose for this pattern!
