How To Do Tunisian Double Crochet

Tunisian crochet is a versatile craft that combines the art of knitting and crocheting. We can achieve a different appearance every time by incorporating different Tunisian stitch styles, such as Tunisian simple stitch, Tunisian knit stitch, Tunisian purl stitch, Tunisian full stitch, Tunisian double crochet stitch, and many more. But today, our spotlight will be on Tunisian double crochet (tdc). Keep yourself hooked until the end of this blog to learn this beautiful technique. And by the end, don't forget to put this theoretical knowledge into practice.

Although this stitch pattern is not frequently worked in rows, it is crucial to master because it forms the basis of other more complex Tunisian stitch designs. The best thing is that compared to the simple stitch, this stitch is somewhat taller and doesn't curl as much.

To initiate this stitch pattern, create any number of stitches and execute the Tunisian Simple stitch foundation row's forward and return passes.

Steps of Crafting Tunisian Double Crochet

Starting Row: Begin with a minimum of 10 chains or as desired on a Tunisian crochet hook. Remember to chain one more than that count to achieve the desired number of double crochet stitches in the row. For example, if you aim for 10 stitches, make 11 chain stitches.

ROW 1: * Yarn over (YO) the hook; insert hook into the back loop of the second chain; YO and draw up a loop (three loops on the hook); YO again and draw up a loop through each of the two loops on the hook (two loops on the hook). Continue from * to the start of your initial chain.

ROW 2: Yarn over (YO) once more and chain through the first loop (the loop you added or cast on your hook) of the second row. * YO and draw up a loop through the next two loops on your hook. Continue from * across the entire row until only one loop remains on the hook.

The reverse pass is now complete. Before commencing the subsequent forward pass, chain 2 (CH2).

ROW 3: * YO, then pull up through one stitch, YO again, and draw up a loop through two stitches by inserting the hook into the vertical bar in the row below the YO. Continue from * until the end of the row.

Pull up that loop and insert the hook into the last two visible vertical bars to complete the stitch. Conclude the row by using these bars as your final stitch.

ROW 4: YO and draw up a loop through the first loop on your hook. * YO and pull up a loop through the next two loops on your hook. Repeat from * across the row until only one loop remains on the hook. Then CH2 before starting the next forward pass.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 for as many rows as desired until feeling confident with the Tunisian double crochet.

Finish off the swatch with a slip knot in the forward pass.

If you desire to craft a larger item, such as a blanket or a throw, using an interchangeable Tunisian crochet hook set would be a smarter choice since a set contains all the essential needle sizes you will need during your crafting session.
