How to Change Colours when Knitting?

Changing colours while knitting is a challenge for many beginner knitters and can sometimes make you despair. Because colour changes that are not done properly can cause unsightly patterns or holes and nobody wants that. In return, proper colour changes can create great designs such as transverse stiffeners or accents, especially in plain knit projects. Of course, good knitting needles also play a major role in the creation of beautiful patterns and neat knitting.

In this blog post, we would like to show you how you can best achieve colour changes and which trick you can use to make them no longer a problem. So you can certainly create beautiful patterns such as horizontal stripes, round circles or a pattern for a children's sweater.

Here is a step-by-step guide on the easiest way to change colours:

Step 01

Knit to the point of your project where you want to make your colour change. Tip for beginners: Practice the colour change with 2 contrasting colours, such as black and white on a small sample project, so you can save mistakes and corrections in your actual project.

Step 02

Our colour change should now take place in the next stitch. Insert the knitting needle into the next knit stitch.

Step 03

Now cross the two threads. To do this, take the thread in the current previous colour and place it on the left side.

Step 04

Hold the previous thread with your left hand and use the knitting needle to pick up the thread with the new colour for embroidering.

Step 05

Knit the stitch as normal with the new colour. Now there is a stitch in the new colour on the right knitting needle.

Step 06

The colour change on the back must be knitted with purl stitches now. To do this, knit all the stitches on the left up to the point where the colour change is to take place. Insert the knitting needle into the next stitch to purl.

Step 07

The threads are crossed again. Take the thread of the current colour and put it aside.
